CommunicationModeTerms

A set of expected values for the property communicationMode.

This set of terms includes: SpokenLanguage WrittenLanguage SignedLanguage Gesture Song WhistledLanguage

These terms are used to describe the mode or modes of communication which were used in the interaction where some data was recorded. The value of this field will be established in relation to the PrimaryResource involved and should retain its value for any DerivedResource related to the PrimaryResource.

For example, an audio recording of a conversation would have the value SpokenLanguage for the field communicationMode. A transcription of that conversation would also have that communicationMode value: the transcription is a written representation of SpokenLanguage, the act of transcription does not change the nature of the language used (there may be exceptions to this statement where a transcription regularises what was actually said, e.g. Hansard). We know that a transcription is a written representation; if we wish to record further information about the properties of the representation, we can use elements from the AnnotationTypeTerms vocabulary, for example, whether the transcription is Orthographic.

The page for each CommunicationModeTerm includes links to further information about that mode of communication.
